Set expectations
Overwater villas in the Maldives, Bora Bora and similar places commonly cost several hundred pounds a night or more. Finding one under about $150 is uncommon, and you should read descriptions closely.
More affordable options
- Southeast Asia: Some places in the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand have over-the-water huts or stilted bungalows at lower prices, though with simpler facilities.
- Malaysia: Some island resorts offer chalets over water.
- Caribbean and Central America: Belize and Mexico have a few over-the-water cabins.
- Maldives guesthouses: Local islands have guesthouses at modest prices, but these are not overwater villas, and local rules apply.
What to check
- Is it actually over water? Look at photos and reviews.
- Facilities: air conditioning, hot water and Wi-Fi.
- Boat transfers: costs and schedules.
- Tides and snorkelling: access to deep water.
- Cancellation policy.
