Look at the total cost
Some visas have low application fees but come with other costs: translated documents, health insurance, background checks, courier fees and sometimes an additional residence permit fee. Add these up before deciding.
What to budget for
- Application fee. Often ranges from under £100 to several hundred pounds.
- Health insurance. Required for most schemes.
- Document costs: certified translations, apostilles and police checks.
- Proof of funds. You may need to show savings or a minimum income, which is not a cost but affects eligibility.
- Renewal fees if you stay for a second year.
How to compare
Use official government pages for fees. Compare the length of stay, whether it can be extended, and the minimum income. A cheaper visa that is hard to renew may cost more in the long run.
Beware of scams
Be cautious about agents who promise guaranteed approval or ask for large payments. Use official application portals, and keep receipts.
Alternatives
Some countries allow stays of 90 days or longer as a tourist, but this does not usually permit work. If you plan to work, check the rules for remote work specifically.
Fees and rules change often. Confirm them on the official site.
